THE AUTISM NEWSLETTER

November, 2022

Director’s Message

The past few months saw many significant developments for CADRRE.
This September we turned 5. CADRRE was born from the realization that there was a dearth of infrastructure to support children and individuals on the spectrum and there was no school devoted to assisting autistic individuals to transition to mainstream life smoothly and live meaningful and independent lives. Into our 5th year, we inched closer to this vision; it gives us immense joy to see two of our trainees from the first batch of the Employability Training Program for Young Adults on the Autism Spectrum get recruited as paid interns by Ernst & Young (EY) Global Delivery Services (GDS) at their Trivandrum Campus. Our team is proud to be able to work towards creating a world of possibilities and hope for individuals on the spectrum.

Few of the significant milestones we achieved in these 5 years:
– Our first centre for children in the age group 2-13 years in September 2017
– 600 FREE Autism assessments by the interdisciplinary team
– International Autism Conference conducted in 2018 and 2019
– A second centre for training in activities of daily living and vocational skills and functional academics for age group 11-18 years in June 2019
– Intervention for school-going children in September 2021
– Parent-mediated intervention in September 2022
– Employability Training Program supported by SBI Card and Payment Services Limited in November 2021
-Pay Autention project in partnership with the Tata Power Community Development Trust in April 2022
– The Artism Studio, skilling program supported by K Nandakumar, Founder & CEO SunTec and Vishal Nevatia, Managing Partner, True North in April 2022
It makes me and my team so proud to look back at where we have come from, and to see where we are now. We are extremely proud of our contribution to families and the wider community in the past year and while we have achieved significant milestones, we continue to be driven by our mission to transform the lives of individuals with autism and their families through
best practices.

A big thank you to our parent community for trusting us to care and support for your loved one. They are the reason we strive so hard to achieve all we can. Lastly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to our Advisory Board led by Mr. K.M.Chandrasekhar and our donor patrons SunTec Business Solutions, UST, and Vishal Nevatia for their support during the year.

Thank you for your continued support and advocacy as we keep working for change together.
This link will take you to a 9 min You Tube video on what we did in the last 5 years and the way ahead.

CADRRE AND PAY AUTENTION PARTNER WITH LOCAL ANGANWADIS TO
CREATE EARLY IDENTIFICATION CHAMPIONS FOR AUTISM IN MUMBAI

Pay Autention is India’s first bridge digital Autism Support network by Tata Power in collaboration with CADRRE. Two members from Team CADRRE along with Pay Autention team from Tata Power conducted an interactive workshop with Anganwadi workers, Govt. staff & parent groups from the Trombay region, Mumbai to learn basic identification marks and behaviour patterns for early identification of the Autism Spectrum & related learning diversities.

The program is aimed at strengthening of Autism Support network through the exchange of experience, partnership building, and reaching out to grassroots communities. It is aimed to create a network of champions who would spot the early signs of autism in toddlers, explain the need for a diagnosis to parents sensitively and professionally and help them to understand the importance of early diagnosis and intervention as well as multi-disciplinary intervention. More than 75 Anganwadi workers and parent group members attended the interactive session and are now empowered to strengthen the Autism Support Network, which helps spread the message of awareness in the community.

PARENT MEDIATED INTERVENTION PROGRAM

The program was piloted during the COVID time with one child. The changes this program brought about to the child and the
family has been a great inspiration and motivation to the CADRRE family and especially the core team behind Autism Screening,
Assessment and Parent Mediated Intervention (PMI) program.
We started our first PMI batch on August 17th, 2022, with 2 children aged 6 years. The 3 weeks of intensive training (Mon-Fri, 9.30
am-1.00pm) was attended by the parents along with their children. There were sessions on social skills, communication skills,
and occupational therapy; the areas of toileting and feeding are also worked on

After the 3 weeks of training ended on September 23rd,
the parents and teachers meet weekly to review progress,
discuss concerns and to plan the activities for the
following week. They will also have monthly in-person
sessions at CADRRE for the next 2 years.
Our next batch will start on October 12 with 4 children.
Testimonial from a PMI parent
“We are very thankful to you and all CADRRE staff for
giving us this golden opportunity. It was such a wonderful
time. The atmosphere of care and compassion at CADRRE
is unmatchable anywhere.”

The soft launch of CADRRE The Artism Studio took place on the 17th of August 2022. It was a beautiful, intimate evening, rekindling
friendships, intense conversations, lot of catching up and unwinding. Many of our friends and well-wishers who supported us in
our journey of celebrating Autistic individuals were present on the day, as we started a new chapter in our journey.

To add a zing to the vibrant evening we had a music performance by Ananya Bijesh, a budding young musician on the Autism
Spectrum. This was the first in The Artism Studio’s Amazing Artists’ Series. We are planning to conduct performances by
differently abled artists every month giving them opportunities to explore and take their talents to a larger audience.

CADRRE ONAM HUES 2022

We had a blissful Onam at CADRRE with children dressing up in their traditional best,
looking lovely in their shirt and mundu, and pattupavadas. A lot of fun games and
activities, dressing up as Maveli and Vamanan, learning the story behind Onam, rekindling
the Onam spirit! Clicking group photos, playing games as a group. Children had set up a
colourful pookalam with the flowers they brought from their homes, living the spirit of
Onam, sharing and helping each other to create a beautiful floral carpet. This way even
parents became a part of their child’s Onam celebration

The children played musical chairs and danced together. There was also a small program coordinated and
conducted by the trainees of the Employability Training Program with group song, skit and dance and what
awaited the team was a splendid and delicious sadya!

PROUD MOMENT FOR CADRRE

Two of our trainees from the first batch of CADRRE Employability Training Program for Young Adults on the Autism Spectrum
got recruited as paid interns by Ernst & Young (EY) Global Delivery Services (GDS) at their Trivandrum Campus.
Our team would not have been able to undertake the training of individuals on the spectrum without the total financial and
moral support of SBI Cards and Payment Services Limited who played a major part by fully supporting the Employability
Training Program (ETP) and ensuring that the trainees got the best inputs without any cost to them.

img"

The ETP program at CADRRE is totally free and open to young adults in the age group 18 to 25. The program is run out of
CADRRE’s Trivandrum center. SBI Cards is continuing to support this program that has set a target to train 100 young
adults on the spectrum.

It was a red-letter day for the parents and family of Rohit and Liya as well! To see their children, surpass all challenges
and work hard to create a life for themselves where they are financially independent and meaningfully employed
means the world to them!

And CADRRE is happy and proud beyond words to be able to enable them and support them in this journey. We cannot thank the
EY team enough for driving the change and being in the forefront in creating neurodivergent workspaces and realizing the
benefits of a diverse work environment.
Liya and Rohit and their parents featured on Malaya Manorama’s Sunday edition. Their love is a sure testimony to the fact that a
happy home can do wonders for your child and that parents are the best teachers to their children and loving them
unconditionally is the best therapy they can give. To read the article click here

No matter how small the gesture, a smile, a touch or sometimes even just a nod can make a teacher’s
day! This section will highlight the best moment from a compilation of a few that are recalled by teachers
every day before they begin classes

WOW! MOMENTS

It was an impromptu vocabulary building exercise for Gyan where he had to
draw a picture from his imagination and name it. He had to build it further by
adding one word to the original name and make a longer phrase each time.
He first named his drawing as “king” and before the teacher could think of a
suitable adjective, he wrote “Royal King” and it kept on coming. It is always a
delight for teachers to watch the child’s creative juices flowing in.

-As they come into CADRRE in the morning, the students pass through the
staff room to walk into the classroom area. Samuel and Hazeeb took us by
surprise when they saw each other and gave each other a high-five as if
they had been doing it forever. One might wonder what is so special about
a high-five but initiating a conversation or understanding gestures can be a
difficult minefield for individuals on the spectrum. They may not realise
that being in a certain proximity means people are trying to be friendly. At
CADRRE they are given opportunities to mingle with each other through
group activities; birthdays are celebrated and there are fun games planned
where they are given tasks to work with their classmates so that they
eventually start to notice and understand the presence of their classmates.
So, this high-five was indeed very special and set the spirits high for the
day for all teachers.

UP TO SPEED

This section gives you the latest updates regarding various interventions, activities/ progress of our students

Pre- Schoolers
Children from 3-6 years of age

The new academic year began by welcoming a bunch of new faces to preschool class. Children took some time to settle down
in the class and to adjust with the structure. The focus during this period was on parent training especially for parents of
newcomers. A parent training session was conducted every week for parents of all students. The highlight of the term was the
functional Fridays conducted with great enthusiasm by staff and students.

This gave them an exposure to various functional activities, like making fruit salad, sandwiches, sharing with friends,
washing dishes and putting the wastepaper in dust bin as part of an awareness on cleanliness. The goals from all the
disciplines were incorporated during the functional Friday activities. Children also enjoyed fun activities like movie time,
games and dance on Fridays. This made them feel happy and excited. Parental feedback of children being very happy on
Friday evenings was a sign of of their enjoyment.
For a group of students, we started the SCERT curriculum on an experimental basis. The class timetable is like a regular
class for academics. The academic activities were tried with minimum adaptation techniques. They were able to write a
formal exam with minimal support. Parents were also provided necessary help and guidance throughout.

Juniors
Children from 6 -9 years of age

We have started a new routine for the children designated as “Pack-up time”. Just before children leave for the day, they
should pack their own bag with their own belongings, including book, bag, box, and tab, and be prepared for their parents to
pick them up. This helps kids develop a sense of ”my things.” They are also inspired to know what their personal belongings
are in the classrooms and put them only in their own places. Simple routines like this go a long way in creating habits that
help them in the long run to be more disciplined in terms of how one takes care of one’s own belongings, realising their
responsibilities to keep it safe.
“Functional Friday” activities are introduced to increase the child’s functionality. Children are motivated and thoroughly
enjoying it as well. For Functional Friday, we sprouted microgreens wherein children are assisted to plant them, water them
and the sprouts grown by them are then used to make sandwiches. We worked on the concept of “Sharing is Caring” to help
children develop a sharing mentality, they also made yummy dosas. Starting these activities at this young stage creates an
interest towards cooking and help develop culinary skill which is a life skill.
We also simulated a shopping environment and played a shopping game to help them understand how to act in a store, how
to choose items, and the concept of money. Due to their unique challenges, children on the spectrum might feel anxious to go
in a public place with lot of people and distractions and might not also know how to behave in a social situation. But exercises
like these equip them to deal with such situations and makes it easier for parents to include their children for their outings or
when they go grocery shopping. Children tend to learn a lot of things through observing the world around them and its our
responsibility to create opportunities for them to experience and explore the world around them to learn!

Pre-teens and Teens

Children from 10-12 years of age

The concept of having a monthly theme was introduced this academic year- the themes chosen were Endangered Animals, Rain,
Onam, Grand Parents and so on- which brought in more coherence to the group activities that are done for half an hour every day

A set of 2 books are carefully handpicked to support each
theme, the text digitally adapted to be shown in a screen
and worksheets and activities- art based or sensory- to
complement the story. The display board in the main hall
is also redesigned every fortnight to reflect the theme.
Fridays became more fun and functional! 10:30-12:30
every Friday is dedicated to one functionally relevant
activity- dental hygiene, posting a handmade friendship
card, cooking- which the students did from the beginning
to end.

img
img

For instance, the cooking session would start with
introducing the students to the recipe, listing out the
ingredients, going shopping followed by prepping the
ingredients, cooking and ends with plating and serving.

Team ETP
Adults above 18 years of age

Placing two of our first-batch trainees (Rohit and Liya) at Ernst & Young was like achieving our first pinnacle of success. Rohit
and Liya are now working as part of the Client Success team at EY. Nimmi opted for PSC training and is currently preparing for
the exams. Naufil enrolled for a computer training program at a center in Trivandrum. Aman and his family have gone abroad,
and his parents have assured us that they would keep him engaged. Sreeram and Gayathri were given home plans to work on
at home.
A new batch comprising 8 students with diverse abilities commenced in June. They have settled in comfortably and have been
making steady progress. Three of the trainees, who picked up skills quickly in Level 1 of the programme, are readying
themselves to move to Level 2.
Batch 2 trainees made a commendable effort to perform in front of all the staff and students at CADRRE Onam event. They
danced, sang songs, and even did an act together showcasing the story behind onam. It was an event that instilled confidence
in them. To reinforce this confidence and develop a sense of self-reliance, the trainees are exposed to challenging situations
and unsurprisingly, these have shown positive changes.
Some of the trainees have fascinated us with their remarkable skillsets. Abhilash’s love for art and craft came to light in the
first month of training itself when he brought his canvas paintings and crafts made from household items. Calendars and maps
capture Vaibhav’s attention more than anything else. He darts across them whenever he gets a break. Sreehari’s unusually
sharp visual powers help him discern even the tiniest details of a picture or text. We have seen him read out words
immediately from bits of paper held upside down.

CADRRE TEAM BONDING

One can never pour from an empty cup and recharging one’s batteries and rejuvenating becomes very essential, for not just care
givers but teachers and therapists who work with individuals on the spectrum, as every day is different, which can be equally
challenging and rewarding!
Our team planned a one-day trip to Poovar on the 10th of June 2022 as part of the team building activities planned before the
new academic year

img"

Our team had a fun day with all of us travelling
together to Poovar Island resort. We spent the day
there, played in the beach, travelled in a boat,
watched the rain pouring down to the sea, got
drenched in the rain, clicked selfies and groupies,
played some fun games and had an elaborate buffet
lunch. We had a beautiful time catching up and
unwinding. Sharing a sneak peak to the fun day we
had at Poovar!

WHEN THE NIKA TEAM VISITED CADRRE

A team of 8 from Nika Project , 4 Speech Language Pathologists and 1 Special Educator – from San Francisco State University,
California, and their 3 mentors Dan Phillips, Judith Lunger, and Heather Regan were with us for 2 weeks from July 25-Aug 5. The
NIKA team engages with special needs communities, to educate to the possibilities, and to empower people throughout the
world with tools and knowledge to support their community’s access to communication and learning.
The NIKA team observed our classrooms, recommended communication strategies for the children, prepared communication
boards, trained our teachers in AAC apps, and even planned and conducted a fun Functional Friday. It was a rewarding
experience with a lot of knowledge and idea exchange and their expertise helped the team to experiment new techniques and
the collaboration even helped them in thinking about varied possibilities.
