Director’s Message
This month was very special for the CADRRE family and everyone associated with us, as it gave us binate reasons to rejoice. We had the privilege of welcoming the Honourable Governor of Kerala, Shri Arif Mohammed Khan and his wife Mrs. Reshma Arif to CADRRE.They were happy to see the kind of work that we do at CADRRE and individually congratulated all the staff members for the work they do for the people on the autism spectrum. Yet another milestone was the approval granted to CADRRE by the General Education Department, Government of Kerala. CADRRE is now formally recognised as a special education school. I would like to thank the staff and entire team of CADRRE who worked relenlessly to build the programme from scratch and made this possible. It is inevitable to thank our donor patrons Sun Tec business solutions, UST Global & Advisory Board Members who supported us through the journey. A big thank you to all the parents who trusted & believed in us and our institution to take the utmost care for their children.

Governor’s Visit
to CADRRE

October 24 was a red-letter day for CADRRE as Honourable Governor of Kerala Mr. Arif Mohammed Khan and his wife, Mrs. Reshma Arif, visited our Sasthamangalm centre to learn more about the school and spend time with staff members and children. The Governor who was recently sworn in has been winning hearts with his affable nature and no-airs attitude. The Governor and his wife were received by G. Vijaya Raghavan, Hon Director CADRRE and his wife, Mrs. Rema Vijaya Raghavan; Mr. M I Sahadullah, Chairman KIMS hospital & Advisory Board Member CADRRE, Mr. V S M Nair, Advisory Board member CADRRE; and Mrs. Jaya Chandrasekhar, wife of Mr. K M Chandrasekhar, former cabinet secretary, Government of India and Vice-Chairman, State Planning Board and Advisory Board Member, CADRRE.

Protocols and official procedures took a back seat as the couple went around greeting and interacting with everyone including the children. They were seen sharing some lighter moments with the students as they high-fived one of our toddlers and lifted another one who rushed towards them. The couple was shown around the centre and familiarized with the challenges a person on the spectrum is posed with and the many ways it could be managed.

They took time to learn and understand the various facilities such as the blue room, sensory path, ADL (activities of daily living) room and so on, which are not common to mainstream schools. They appreciated the efforts of the team and wished the school success to scale greater heights and be a role model to other schools across the country serving individuals on the spectrum.

Workshop at Magic Planet to set up
Different Art Centre
Few of our staff at CADRRE attended the workshop conducted
by K-DISC (Kerala Development and Innovation Strategy
Council) in association with KSSM (Kerala Social Security
Mission). The workshop was in connection with the project
“Talent Search for Youth with Disabilities” conducted at
Thiruvananthapuram. The aim of the project is to identify and
engage youth with disabilities who stand out as being
motivated, creative, talented and passionate to nurture their
talents. 45 participants attended the program. After the
program, an individual talent support plan was prepared for
the participants to encourage them to pursue their talents
further.
The program is based on the success of the program which
Magic planet, Trivandrum had conducted earlier as part of
“Anuyathra” initiative by the government. Magic Planet has an
MPower center to train the disabled children in Magic and they
have been conducting shows regularly.
The impact of this program for children was evaluated by Child
Development Centre, Kerala (CDC). They did a retrospective
assessment to evaluate the improvements in these children.
They found remarkable changes in all the domains that were
evaluated. One drawback however, was that the baseline
assessments were not done for these children before they
enrolled in the program.

The goal of the current workshop was to prepare a module-
behavior, personal grooming, therapy and training modules for

the participants, decide on the expected outcomes of the
program, enlist the support needed for the participants, create
a schedule of the training to be given to the individuals and
prepare assessment forms for baseline assessment and post
assessment.
CADRRE staff interacted with experts from various disciplines to
plan the program and the challenges that could arise and also
plan strategies to ensure effectiveness of the program. Such
interactions prove helpful to CADRRE while devising programs
for our children and such collaborative associations go a long
way in helping out institutions that engage in the betterment of
the differently abled.

WOW! Moments

No matter how small the gesture, a smile, a touch or sometimes even just a nod can make a teacher’s day! This section will highlight the best moment from a compilation of a few that are recalled by teachers every day before they begin classes.

One of the uphill tasks, a parent or a special educator faces with a child on the autism spectrum is his inability to make social
connections. Even in a class of few students it becomes difficult to get them to acknowledge each other and make connections.
However, during one of our break sessions, we were all up for a visual treat when the toddler group started to play hide-n-seek on their
own. Yes, the standard rules of the game did not apply here with everyone hiding and no one to seek. But when we get to see the
children enjoy each other’s company, who cares for the rules?!
But it was unquestionably cute to see them engaging in a group play and enjoying the company.

Thought for the month

A child’s mental health is just as important as their physical health and deserves the same quality of support. No one would
feel embarrassed about seeking help for a child if they broke their arm — and we really should be equally ready to support a
child coping with emotional difficulties.
